Modern Foreign Languages
A small, friendly and welcoming Department, the Modern Foreign Languages department has one full-time and one part-time member of staff, who teach both French and German at Key Stage 3. Miss Simpson specialises in French at GCSE and Mrs Waine specialises in German at GCSE. The Department forms part of the Communication Faculty. Staff in the Department work hard to ensure that language learning is motivational, relevant and meaningful to our students.
At Key Stage 3, students will study either French or German in Year 7 and continue the same language in Year 8. The emphasis is on having fun whilst learning a language and making good progress. Language games, songs and speaking work ensure that all students are well-motivated to achieve well.
At Key Stage 4, the Department currently offers GCSE courses in French and German, with some students opting to study both of these. Modern Foreign Languages are a popular option at GCSE with almost 200 students studying either French or German at Key Stage 4.
The department has two well-equipped rooms and students have access to modern, blended language learning through combined online and printed Nelson Thornes course books. This allows students to access and extend their learning outside the classroom. Digital voice recorders allow students to record and improve their speaking work. We have developed strong links with Scarborough 6th Form College and last year saw over 40% of our students opting to begin A-level German.
Students in the department are well-supported and regularly spend time after school in the department to further their learning.
We provide an opportunity every year for around 40 students to visit either France or Germany and have recently returned from a hugely enjoyable week in the Rhineland area of Germany.il.
Our next trip will be to the Rhineland area of Germany in July 2015 which will involve 43 Year 9 and 10 students.
